When hiking in the National Park, no mountain equipment is needed. Comfortable walking shoes with extra socks or hiking boots are recommended for day walks. Be prepared for rain.

Always hike with a map, even if you think you know the route. Download a map for free, or visit any of the Park visitor centers to purchase a map for $1.

When planning a trip in the National Park, always check temporary road and facilities closures.

Address: Great Smoky Mountains National Park,Cades Cove
  • Length: 9 miles up and back
  • Start: Parsons Branch Rd. to Gregory Bald.
  • Features:  Sheep Pen Gap and Gregory Bald. Incredible views of Cades Cove and flame azaleas in June.
Little River Road and Laurel Creek Road junction about a mile south of Townsend (TN). Follow the signs at the junction to Cades Cove (Laurel Creek Road). It is about 7.5 miles to the start of the Cades Cove Loop road. The Loop is one way and traffic moves slowly. Also, check for road closures (ie, Wednesday and Saturday mornings, Loop is bicycles only.) It is 5.50 miles around the Loop to the Visitors Center. Just beyond the Visitors Center the Loop road makes a sharp left turn, go straight on Forge Creek Road for Gregory Ridge Trailhead. Continue on Forge Creek Road. The road ends after 2.2 miles at Gregory Ridge Trailhead.
